Why are many small town folk ignorant?

I have lived in a small rural town all through jr high and high school. I announced in the senior book that I was moving to the city as soon as possible (because I hated it there) and most of these kids especially the popular ones have been raised up there their whole lives and nearly have a hard attack at the thought of a city or anything that isn't slow paced and white Christian. Why is this?
