All my documents and pictures gone after virus?

So, I got myself a lovely little virus on my computer a couple nights ago, and Malware bytes got it and cleaned it, as well as Microsoft Security Essentials. I've had these before, but never quite so aggressive. It started with a little window requesting my permission for something, so, out of instinct, I just closed it. However, less than a second later it popped up again. Then came a window saying hard drive failure. It took me forever to get task manager open, then malware bytes. The virus seems to be gone, and my computer says it's clean, but everything is gone. My documents and pictures have all disappeared, but my iTunes and skype/msn messenger/gmail are all still in tact. I would really like to have all of my stuff back, and everything online is using terms that I've never even seen before. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS. If you have advice, act as though you are trying to help your great great grandmother through this issue. Thanks!
