I'm sorry because I can only truthfully answer your last question, I think it might be a bit of help though. Cohesion is the tendency for water molecules to stick to each other, and adhesion is the tendency for water molecules to stick to other surfaces, therefore, the water sticks to the xylem and it is forced upward while it effectively carries other water molecules along with it, I hope that makes sense.
